Frank G. King

Frank Gerhard Königs (born March 21, 1955 in Bochum ; † April 20, 2019 ) was a German scientist specializing in language teaching research and foreign language didactics . As a university professor, he taught general didactics and language teaching research at the Philipps University of Marburg .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1973, Königs studied linguistic research, Romance philology and political science at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In 1979 he finished his studies and obtained the academic degree Magister Artium with the title "with distinction". In 1981 he became the specialist language teaching research with the grade "summa cum laude" doctorate . In December 1983 he received an award from the Ruhr University Bochum for his scientific work. The habilitation followed in 1990 with a thesis on the subject When translating you write - do you translate when you write? A psycholinguistically oriented comparison of two foreign language production processes in advanced German Spanish learners. From 1990 to 1995 he was a lecturer at the seminar for language teaching research at the University of Bochum. In addition to his teaching activities, he held several visiting professorships in Brazil and Chile. In April 1995 he took over the professorship at the University of Leipzig for the subject "Methodology and Didactics of Foreign Language Teaching, especially German as a Foreign Language". In April 1998 he was appointed to Marburg and in July took up the professorship for “General Didactics and Language Teaching Research” at the Department of Education at the Philipps University of Marburg. In the same year he also took over the management of the information center for foreign language research in Marburg. From January 2000 he was also the managing director of the language center, the establishment of which is largely thanks to him.

Work and research

König's main research areas were didactics and methods of teaching foreign languages ​​as well as the psycholinguistics of foreign language acquisition. His research projects focus on the empirical determination of learning procedures and processes and the resulting consequences for foreign language teaching and second language acquisition. The scientific occupation with learning and teaching material were also focal points of his work.

In over 200 publications, Königs discussed the subject of learning and teaching foreign languages ​​and tried to provide answers to questions about optimizing, influencing and making learning processes more effective.
