Inge Vervotte (born December 27, 1977 in Bonheiden ) is a Belgian politician of the Christians Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V). She was first a minister in the Flemish government under Yves Leterme (CD&V), but followed him in 2007 when he moved to the federal government. Since her retirement from politics in 2012, she has been the managing director of the Christian health organization Emmaüs .

Life

Inge Vervotte completed her studies as a social assistant at the Katholieke Hogeschool Leuven (KHLeuven) in Heverlee in 1998 . She began her professional career at the Christian trade union (ACV - Algemeen Christelijk Vakverbond ), where after a short time she gave lessons to trade union delegates at the training center for the public service. She was then appointed union secretary, first for Sabena and then for the entire aviation sector.

Vervotte was noticed by then-President of CD&V , Stefaan De Clerck , when she stood up for the airline's workers following the bankruptcy of Sabena. Inge Vervotte chose the Flemish Christian Democrats for their entry into politics.

In 2003 she was elected a federal deputy and in 2004 a member of the Flemish Parliament . In the same year she was promoted to Flemish Minister for Wellbeing, Health and Families under the Flemish Prime Minister Yves Leterme (CD&V).

After the federal elections in 2007, Vervotte left this post and turned back to the federal level. When, after a long government crisis, the transitional government of Verhofstadt III under Guy Verhofstadt ( Open VLD ) was sworn in, Vervotte was given the office of Minister for Public Service. She kept this office in the successor government under Prime Minister Yves Leterme.

In 2008, the so-called " Fortis affair" broke out, in which judicial circles reported that Yves Leterme's politicians and particularly high-ranking employees had put pressure on the judges who dealt with irregularities in the sale of the Fortis group the bank BNP Paribas , and thus the separation of powers was violated. When as a result, Justice Minister Jo Vandeurzen (CD&V) and finally Yves Leterme and the entire government resigned, Vervotte renounced participation in the Van Rompuy government under Herman Van Rompuy (CD&V) and met again as ordinary MPs. At the same time she began further studies in the UK .

When Leterme returned as Prime Minister in 2009, Vervotte rose again to the federal government and took over the same portfolio that she had already held in the previous federal governments.

In 2011 she announced her retirement from politics in order to be able to become the managing director of the Christian health organization Emmaüs . She completed her mandates in the Chamber of Deputies and in the Mechelen City Council by 2012.
