Leterme I government

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Belgian government, Leterme I, was in office from March 20, 2008 to December 30, 2008. On March 22, 2008, the Chamber of Deputies gave her confidence. The government consisted of fifteen ministers (including prime ministers) and seven state secretaries.

This first government, led by Yves Leterme (CD&V), was made up of the Flemish (Open VLD) and Francophone Liberals (MR), the Flemish Christian Democrats (CD&V) and the Francophone Center Humanists (cdH) and Socialists (PS).

With the formation of the Leterme I government, a nine-month government crisis temporarily ended, which was bridged by the Verhofstadt III government under Guy Verhofstadt . On July 14, 2008, Leterme offered King Albert II his resignation for the first time due to internal tensions , but the latter refused the request.

As a result of the so-called " Fortis affair", in which judicial circles reported that Yves Leterme had exerted pressure on the judges, who dealt with irregularities in the sale of the Fortis group to the BNP Paribas bank, from politics and especially from high-ranking employees and thus the separation of powers was violated, the Leterme I government resigned after nine months in office on December 19, 2008. The king accepted this resignation on December 22, 2008. The successor government was the Van Rompuy government on December 30, 2008 with almost the same composition as the Leterme I government.
