Sabine Laruelle

Sabine Laruelle (born June 2, 1965 in Huy ) is a Belgian politician of the Mouvement Réformateur (MR). From 2003 she was minister, most recently with responsibility for medium- sized enterprises , small and medium-sized enterprises , the self-employed and agriculture in the federal government under Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo ( PS ). She has been President of the Belgian Senate since 2019 .

Life

Sabine Laruelle holds a degree in agricultural engineering from the Faculté universitaire des Sciences agronomiques de Gembloux (FUSAGx). Before starting her political career, she worked for agricultural interest groups and trade unions and was Director General of the Wallonia Agricultural Federation ("Fédération Wallone de l'Agriculture", FWA) from 2001 to 2003. On October 21, 2013, Laruelle announced her intention to leave politics after the 2014 federal elections. However, five years later, she returned to politics by being elected a member of the Walloon Parliament in 2019 . Following her subsequent appointment as Community Senator by the Walloon Parliament, Sabine Laruelle has also been President of the Belgian Senate since July 2019 .

As part of the formation of a government after the 2019 parliamentary elections , King Philippe commissioned them on February 19, 2020, together with Patrick Dewael , chairman of the chamber , to carry out a new mediation mission.

Laruelle is in command of the Order of the Leopold .
