Julie Fernandez Fernandez (born March 20, 1972 in Liège ) is a Belgian politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS). She has been a parliamentarian since 2010 and was briefly State Secretary for People with Disabilities in the Leterme I and Van Rompuy governments . She has been a member of the Liège City Council since 2000, where she has been a lay judge since 2006.

Life

The Spanish parents of Julie Fernandez Fernandez fled the in the 1960 Franco regime and settled in Liege. There she studied communication sciences at the Institute des Sciences de l'Information et des Sciences Sociales (ISIS).

In 1995 she was recruited to work in the cabinet of the then Prime Minister of the French Community , Laurette Onkelinx (PS). A little later she became an advisor to the European parliamentarians Jean-Maurice Dehousse (PS) and Véronique De Keyser (PS), as well as the State Secretary Isabelle Simonis (PS).

Julie Fernandez Fernandez began her real political career at the local level when she was elected to the Liege City Council in 2000. In 2006 she was able to maintain her mandate and has been the city's civil magistrate ever since .

In 2008 she caused a stir when, despite her lack of parliamentary experience, she was promoted to the federal government as State Secretary, first under Prime Minister Yves Leterme ( CD&V ) and then under Herman Van Rompuy (CD&V). There Fernandez Fernandez was responsible for the “Persons with a Disability” department. In 2009, she was replaced prematurely by Philippe Courard (PS) and moved to the Walloon Parliament .

In the federal elections on June 13, 2010, Julie Fernandez Fernandez was elected to the federal Chamber of Deputies and has since defended her mandate there.
