Ingeborg Gerda Gabriel (born April 24, 1952 in Wels , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian Roman Catholic theologian and social scientist (economics, international relations).

She has held the chair for social ethics at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna since 1997. Her main research interests are (social) ethical principles, international ethics with a special focus on human rights ethics, business ethics and ecology. She is currently the special representative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in the fight against racism, xenophobia, intolerance and discrimination, especially against Christians and members of other religions (2017, 2019). The ecumenical discourse plays just as important a role for her as the interreligious dialogue in which she has been active for years.

biography

Ingeborg G. Gabriel was born in Wels (Upper Austria). She was a fellow of the American Field Service (AFS) in Long Beach, California (1968/69). From 1970 to 1974 she studied economics at the University of Vienna and graduated with a master's degree in social and economic sciences (Mag. Rer. Soc. Oec.). In the second subject she studied philosophy and German studies. From 1974 to 1976 she completed the post-graduate course in international relations at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna and obtained a master’s degree. In 2010 she was inducted into the Academy's Hall of Fame.

She then worked as an international civil servant in the United Nations Development Aid Program (UNDP) in New York (1976/1977), in Kathmandu, Nepal (1977/1978) and as a Vice-Resident Representative in Ulan Bator, People's Republic of Mongolia (1978–1978) 1980). Then she studied theology in Vienna and graduated with a Mag. Theol. (1986) and the Dr. theol. (1989) in Old Testament biblical studies with Professor Braulik. In addition, she was first a freelancer at ORF (1981/1982) and then university assistant at the Institute for Ethics and Social Sciences (from 1982). In 1995 she became assistant professor and head of the department for international ethics at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna.

In 1997 she was appointed full university professor. She was the first woman in the history of the Catholic Faculty of the University of Vienna (founded in 1384) to be appointed full professor. Since then she has held the chair for Christian social teaching and social ethics. In her academic research and teaching she deals on the one hand with fundamental questions of social ethics, on the other hand with questions of applied political and economic ethics, whereby ecumenical and interreligious cooperation is a particular concern of her. In 2008 she spent a sabbatical semester as a fellow at the Institute on Culture Religion and World Affairs (Professor Peter L. Berger) at Boston University.

Ingeborg Gabriel was President of the Association for Social Ethics in Central Europe (2011–2019). During this time she taught and lectured in many countries in the region. She initiated and coordinated the EU-funded CEEPUS program "Ethics and Politics in the European Context", in which 17 Central European universities and institutes with social science, social ethics and theological subjects were involved and more than 400 students and teachers between 2012 and 2017 enabled an academic exchange.

Ingeborg Gabriel has been active in interreligious, especially Christian-Muslim, dialogue since the 1980s. From 2001 to 2008 she was a member of the Steering Committee of the Vienna Christian-Islamic Round Table (VICIRoTa). The volumes on social issues in Christian-Muslim dialogue published during these years are available online in several languages. In 2006 she founded (together with Irmgard Marboe) the Vienna Christian-Islamic Summer University, of which she was Vice Director until 2014 and at which she taught during this time. She served on the Board of the Dialogue Institute at Temple University (Philadelphia) from 2010 to 2016 and is Associate Editor of the Journal for Ecumenical Studies, a jury member of the Centesimus Annus-Pro Pontifice Foundation and a member of Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church (CTEWC), des Board of the ERC Projects Postsecular Conflicts, the scientific advisory board of the yearbook for Christian social sciences and the scientific advisory board of the Edith Stein Society.

Ingeborg Gabriel held a variety of university functions. She was a member of the founding convention of the University of Vienna; Senator of the University of Vienna (1997–2006; 2010–2013) and Vice Dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty (2010–2012), as well as head of the Institute for Social Ethics for many years (1997–2016). She is head of the social ethics department and deputy head of the Institute for Systematic Theology and Ethics (since 2017).

Non-university functions include: Director of the "Iustitia et pax" commission of the Austrian Bishops' Conference (2008-2016), which is dedicated to fundamental socio-political issues relating to the issues of peace, justice and human rights, and Vice-President of the "Iustitia et pax" commissions in Europe ( 2013-2019). She is Vice-Chairwoman of the Ethics Advisory Board of the bank Schellhammer & Schattera (Vienna).

Ingeborg Gabriel also deals with current questions of ethics and social ethics for a wider audience in numerous media articles in daily and weekly newspapers, as well as for television and radio.
