Ingelheim Garden - Darmstadt

The Ingelheimer Garten is a small green space in Darmstadt . The green area with a triangular floor plan was named after the town of Ingelheim am Rhein .

history

The Ingelheimer Garten was once the garden of the former officers' mess of the Darmstadt cavalry regiments, which no longer exists today and was built in 1902. Together with the former artillery barracks opposite , the barracks were among the first military buildings to be erected here around 1900 - when the military was increasingly moved to the outskirts.

After a temporary use as a parking area, the approximately 0.5 hectare (= 5,000 m²) park was restored in 1989 and 1990. The Ingelheim Garden was opened to the public on July 5, 1990. The green area was designed by the Frankfurt office Götte und Partner.

Others

In the northeast corner of the green area there is a spiral-shaped fountain with an artificial stream. An artificial spring gushes in the middle of a round, meter-high stone block, it pours its water into a ring of rectangular channels that radiate outwards from the center, through which the water flows outwards and over the edge of the well block into a wide ring-shaped channel. From there it then passes through a channel cross into an outer channel ring and finally flows further as a curved watercourse next to the path to the children's playground in the background of the garden. The well system is a representation of the course of a river from the source over many branches to the mouth.

There is a children's playground in the south-east corner.

Monument protection

The enclosure of the Ingelheim garden comes from the garden of the former officers' mess of the Trainkaserne, which was built in 1902 and destroyed in an air raid in 1944 . The posts of the yellow brick wall are crowned with mighty sandstone domes and are framed by forged iron gates and fences .
