Ingrid Monson
Ingrid T. Monson (* 1955 ) is an American jazz researcher and trumpeter.
Monson studied economics at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and then jazz trumpet at the New England Conservatory of Music . Since 1980 she has worked with Ran Blake , Don Byron and, over a longer period of time, with the "Klezmer Conservatory Band", which she co-founded. She then deepened her studies in ethnomusicology at New York University .
She was an assistant professor at the University of Chicago since 1991 and then at Washington University . Your book Saying Something. Jazz Improvisation and Interaction (Chicago 1996) builds on her dissertation “Musical Interaction in Modern Jazz: An Ethnomusicological Perspective”. She also gave the book African Diaspora. A Musical Perspective (New York 2000). In her book Freedom Sounds. Jazz, Civil Rights and Africa, 1950-1967 she dealt with the influence of the civil rights movement and Black Nationalism on jazz. Since 2001 she has been " Quincy Jones Professor of African American Music" at Harvard University .
In 2020 Monson was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
