The Minorities Initiative (IM) has existed since 1991 and is a non-governmental organization in Austria . It is organized as an association and has offices in Vienna and Innsbruck.

activity

The most important purpose of the association is a society that is fair to minorities, "in which individual life plans are recognized as equal and of equal value regardless of characteristics such as ethnic, social or religious affiliation, sexual orientation and disability." A society is only minority fair if it reflects the various life plans equally and enable and promote justly. The IM fights politically and journalistically against discrimination, prejudice and the exclusion of all minorities. The Minorities Initiative wants to form “minority alliances” in order to enforce socio-political concerns, so it cooperates closely with associations, organizations and individuals from the minority area and is guided by their requirements.

In addition to media work via magazines, radio and the Internet, IM is active in schools, universities and adult education, organizing symposia, summer schools, cultural events and exhibitions. Political lobbying, participation in political bodies and in networks of NGOs also appear to be important to the IM.

voice

The magazine Voice has been published since 1991 (until 2010 under the title Voice of and for Minorities ) to “on the one hand inform the public about the concerns of ethnic groups, migrants, the disabled, homosexuals, in short: the discriminated social groups, on the other hand the formation of alliances between them minority groups ”. The magazine appeared irregularly at the beginning, but since 1993 it has been published quarterly.

Radio voice

The biweekly radio program of the initiative makes "contributions outside the mainstream" and wants to "stimulate thought about social dominance and power relations". The one-hour program has been broadcast twice a month since 1998 on the free, non-commercial Viennese radio station Orange 94.0 . Repetitions of the program run at fixed broadcasting times on the stations Freie Radio Innsbruck , Radio AGORA , Radio Helsinki - Verein free Radio Styria , Radio Proton , Radio FRO , Radiofabrik 107.5 , Free Radio B138 and Free Radio Salzkammergut . In 2005, 2007 and 2013 Radio Voice was awarded the Austrian Adult Education Radio Prize in the categories “Interactive / Experimental” (2005) and “Short programs” (2007, 2013).
