Radio Proton (official name: Proton - the free radio ) is a free private radio program from Dornbirn (Vorarlberg). The organizer is the umbrella organization for cultural and media initiatives and youth . The program is designed by volunteer workers from different generations and cultures in different languages, including Vorarlberg dialect. The station sees itself as "one of the most important intercultural and international projects in the Vorarlberg region."

history

The station sees its roots in a scene of independent print media that was established in Vorarlberg in the 1970s with various publications. The Association for the Promotion of Media Diversity was founded in Vorarlberg as a sponsoring association for free media in the vicinity of several pirate stations that were suppressed by the "opinion tracking apparatus" of public authorities before the official introduction of private broadcasting . After the association did not get a chance at the first license award and joined a constitutional lawsuit against the Austrian Regional Radio Act (RRG), frequencies were put out to tender again in 1996. In December 1997, the umbrella association of Vorarlberg communication and leisure centers for the Bludenz coverage area (104.6 MHz), local radio Bludenz with a theoretical technical range of 50,000 radio listeners, was awarded the contract.

While the sponsoring association even broke up in the meantime due to a lack of financing options and the lack of space, on the other hand, regular “radio meetings” took place. With the support of Bregenz Local Radio GmbH and the Association of Free Radios Austria , a cooperation with 95.9 Music Radio was concluded in March 1999 . The broadcasting started one day later in complete dependence on Bregenz local radio, which broadcast the contributions prepared in private rooms.

In June of the same year the company moved into a production studio in Dornbirn and has been broadcasting live programs from there since October 1999.

Until the frequency was reorganized in Vorarlberg in 2007, it was broadcast as a third-party provider. Since April 2008, Radio Proton has been broadcasting a 24-hour program under its own license from the regulatory authority KommAustria from the transmitter Bludenz 3 (Muttersberg UKW 104.6 MHz). From October 2009 the Feldkirch supply area (Vorderälpele 104.3 MHz, since then “Bludenz and Feldkirch”) was added. In the meantime, broadcasts are also being made for Bregenz (92.7 MHz) and Dornbirn (101.1 MHz), with a separate broadcast license for the same program.

program

A classic program radio is broadcast around the clock with focus-specific programs, which are provided on the station's homepage in the form of a daily updated weekly overview for orientation. The thematic orientation corresponds to the usual agenda for free radios, freedom, social and cultural responsibility, often politically left, and emancipatory goals to be the focus of the program content. The choice of music follows the content and thematic content of the spoken contributions, but also has its own special programs.

Parts of the program are currently being organized by 24 associations and other groups, which create their own special programs on the topics of their focus and contribute to the diversity of opinion with their lobbying work.

Statute and implementation

The broadcaster supports the Charter of the Free Radios Austria and supports its principles and demands, including open access / participation, local reference / regional development and the demand for a trial broadcasting system and journalistic equality.

The implementation of the statute includes the regular implementation of training courses for employees, which are publicly offered to all interested parties and in some cases for reimbursement of expenses, and the design of individual workshops for interested groups.

Program funding

Since free access to both listening and programming should not be linked to membership in an association, the association calls for donations to finance the costs (called “radio subscription”) and sells merchandising items to a limited extent .

reception

Radio Proton can be received via the stations "Bludenz 3" ( Muttersberg ) on FM 104.6 MHz with 501 watts ERP and "Feldkirch 2" ( Auf der Egg ) 104.3 MHz with 200 watts. The supply area are Bludenz (Bludenz, Walgau and Montafon ) and Feldkirch (Feldkirch, Göfis and Vorderland ).

The transmitter is fed into the local cable networks by Kabel Lampert and Kabel Montafonerbahn - mbs , and the homepage offers two live streams in MP3 format (64 kbit / s ) and ogg format (V. 0.3, ~ 112 kbit / s).
