The island spiky-tailed panties ( Aphrastura masafuerae ) is a rare species of bird in the potter bird family . It is endemic to Alejandro Selkirk in the Juan Fernández Islands .

description

The island spiky tail panties reach a size of 16.5 centimeters. The hood and ear area are dark brown with a dull beige-gray eye stripe. The underside is beige gray-brown. The wings are black with two beige-brown bands on the wing feathers. The tail is black with reddish-brown central feathers and broad tips on the outer tail feathers. The beak is slender. His call consists of a whirring trrrt.

Occurrence and habitat

The island spiky-tailed panties live in an 11 km² area on Alejandro Selkirk (Más Afuera) in the Juan Fernández Islands . It occurs mainly in fern forests with Dicksonia externa , Drimys confertifolia and Lophosoria quadripinnata and is most commonly seen at altitudes between 600 and 1300 m along streams, where the Dicksonia ferns reach a height of five meters.

Way of life

In contrast to its closest relative, the sociable spiny-tailed panties ( Aphrastura spinicauda ) from Chile and Argentina , the island-spiked-tailed panties only live individually or in pairs. Each pair needs a territory size of at least 4 hectares, which can be larger if the quality of the habitat is poor. The island spikytail hatchers nest in small holes in steep rock faces, usually five meters above the ground.

status

In the mid-1980s, the population was estimated at around 500–1000 specimens. During a counting operation from 1992 to 1993 there were only about 200 individuals and in 2001/2002 the population had shrunk to 140 specimens. The trampling of the vegetation by goats and bush fires have led to a severe degradation of the fern forests on Alejandro Selkirk. Introduced house rats and mice chase after the young birds, red-backed buzzards and feral domestic cats are a threat to the adult birds. The species is listed by the IUCN as "critically endangered".
