Instant Funk was an American disco and funk band from the late 1970s and early 1980s that only had one international hit with Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl) . As a result, they are usually viewed as a one hit wonder .
biography
The group was founded in the mid-1970s and was initially under contract with Philadelphia Records and released their records on the sister label TSOP. The first single Float Like a Butterfly was released in 1975, the debut album Get Down with the Philly Jump followed the following year. At the beginning of 1977 Instant Funk achieved its first notable success in the American disco charts with It Ain't Reggae But It's Funky . They also sang in the background for Bunny Sigler . However, there were no further commercial successes and the band soon lost their record deal again.
A change to the Salsoul Records label , which specializes in disco, brought about a turning point. The first single was already well received by pop, R&B and disco fans. Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl) made it into the American top 20 and was also number one in the R&B and disco charts. Both for this hit as well as for the simple Instant Funk -titled second album, the band Instant Funk received a Gold award. Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl) also made it into the Dutch, Belgian and British charts. Exactly in the middle of funk and disco, the song developed into a classic, especially because of the “Say What” exclamations in the chorus, but it was to remain the only big crossover success for the ensemble.
Between 1979 and 1983 the group reached nine hits in the American R&B charts: Witch Doctor (1979) and No Stoppin 'that Rockin' (1983) made it into the top 40. Further successes were also achieved in the disco charts. After one last album for Salsoul in 1983, the band broke up.
