Instax is a range of instant cameras from the Japanese manufacturer Fujifilm . It has been marketed since the late 1990s. There are three different film formats: the "Wide" format, which provides a photo with 60 mm × 99 mm, the "Square" format with 61 mm × 61 mm and the "Mini" format with a size of 62 mm × 46 mm.

Features & history

In 1999, Fujifilm introduced the first Instax cameras. Originally, Fujifilm wanted to sell these cameras worldwide from the start, but due to concerns about a patent infringement lawsuit from the market leader Polaroid , it was decided to work with Polaroid to develop the Polaroid mio based on the Instax mini 10/20 for the US market. However, the mio did not turn out to be a success and so it was discontinued after a few years.

The Instax Wide films were also sold from the start, but could not establish themselves in the USA . In Japan, the country of origin of Fujifilm, the film was able to establish itself as a product for the mass market and it was thus kept alive.

In 2008 Polaroid stopped producing instant film and Fujifilm was the only manufacturer of films for instant cameras until the founding of "The Impossible Project" in 2010.

In contrast to the Polaroid film cassettes, the Fuji Instax films did not have built-in batteries, which made the system more economical and ecological.

Instax Mini

Instax Mini is an ISO 800 film measuring 86 mm × 54 mm, which is roughly the size of a credit card. It is designed primarily for use in daylight, but can also be exposed with the aid of the flash built into the camera.

It should be particularly emphasized that the Instax Mini Film is not only available with a white frame, but also with other motifs, such as the colors of a rainbow or colorful stripes. In September 2016 the 'Instax Mini Monochrome', a black and white film, was introduced.

    Digital Instax Pivi

    The project did not end with the publication of the FinePix PR21. An independent printer was planned from the start, but it never had the highest priority. However, when cell phones with integrated cameras became more important, the printer was introduced in 2004 after five years of development. The film for Instax Pivi cameras looked the same as the Instax Mini film, but the use in an Instax Mini camera resulted in an upside-down image. The Digital Instax Pivi series was planned as a hybrid of digital and analog photo technology. The idea behind it was similar to the Olympus C-211, a digital camera with a built-in Polaroid 500 printer. Fujifilm pursued this idea in 1999 with the FinePix PR21, a digital camera with a built-in Instax-mini printer

    When it was first introduced, the Instax “wide” was only called Instax, but the name “Wide” was gradually added to differentiate it from the Instax Mini. This new naming was also evident in the camera models, the current model is called the Instax Wide 300.

    Instax Square

    In May 2017, the Instax Square SQ10, the first Instax camera with a square film format, was introduced. A year later, the hybrid SQ10 was followed by the fully analogue SQ6 .
