The Institut dominicain d'études orientales (acronym Idéo , Arabic معهد الدراسات الشرقية للآباء الدومنكيين, DMG Maʿhad ad-Dirāsāt aš-Šarqiyya li-l-Ābāʾ ad-Dūmnikiyyīn ) is a Dominican- run institute for the study of Islam and Arab culture. It was founded in 1953 and is based in Cairo .

IDEO, Cairo

history

The IDEO was founded in 1953. The first thoughts on this were given as early as 1937. At the suggestion of Cardinal Tisserant , the then secretary of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches , the Holy See commissioned the Dominican Order to found an institute for Islamic studies. The Dominicans Georges Anawati , Serge de Beaurecueil and Jacques Jomier formed a working group to found such a group, which could not be realized at this time due to the international situation. Because of its cultural charisma and its prestige in the Arab world, and especially because of the al-Azhar University and its intellectual importance for Sunni Islam, Egypt appeared to be the most suitable country to found such an institute. The Dominican convent l'Abbassiah, founded by Antonin Jaussen in 1928, finally became the seat of the IDEO.

The Idéo today

research

Today the Ideo is primarily a research center that deals with a common subject, the original texts of the first ten centuries of Islam. This range allows different specializations. Several members of the institute teach at foreign universities and all publish in scientific journals. They also contribute to the institute's journal, the Mélanges de l'Institut dominicain d'études orientales (Midéo). Each issue brings new work to our knowledge as well as a critical bulletin of Arabic texts.

The library

The library is equipped with more than 150,000 volumes and numerous journals and thus covers the entire area of the disciplines of Islamic studies: the Arabic language, the Koran, exegesis, theology, law and jurisprudence, history, philosophy, Sufism , natural sciences and so on further. The reading rooms, the shelves and the employees' rooms are now housed in a new building opened in 2002. To create a catalog, the employees use appropriate programs that can also process the Arabic language. Today the library has a worldwide reputation.

Interreligious Dialogue and Introduction to Islam

In addition to its scientific and academic work, the Idéo also plays a role as a partner in interreligious dialogue . In Egypt, the institute organizes annual summer seminars to introduce young Dominicans to Islam. The same applies to the young Dominicans in France, where the events mainly take place in Lille . Religious authorities in Cairo and the Middle East with which the Institute has ties include Al-Azhar University and the Coptic Orthodox Church .
