The Institute for Loss Prevention and Loss Research of the Public Insurers eV (IFS) is a central institution of the public insurers in the field of loss prevention in Germany.

The institute was founded in 1976 in Kiel and operates in the legal form of an association . All public non-life insurers are members of this association . The purpose of the institute consists of the following tasks:

  1. The institute promotes loss prevention in all areas of property insurance and conducts research into the causes of damage. The research focus is on fire protection , electrical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical and physical fields. The institute collects scientific results and practical experience through its own investigations, evaluates the experiences of its members and informs its members about the results obtained. To promote the idea of loss prevention in the general public, the institute carries out appropriate press work.
  2. The institute supports the members upon request in processing individual contractual and claims matters.

In order to do justice to this statutory mandate, the institute carries out extensive expert reports in which the causes of individual damage are researched. The systematic evaluation of these damage experiences results in knowledge and recommendations for damage prevention. The focus is on fire damage and tap water damage . These are made available to the interested public as part of public relations work, mainly via print and online media. The IFS also regularly publishes its results in the magazine for loss prevention and loss research for public insurers, the " Schadenprisma ".

In addition to the headquarters of the institute in Kiel, there are locations in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hanover, Münster, Munich, Wiesbaden and Stuttgart.
