The Institute for Earth System Preservation ( IESP ) is an international network of scientists, engineers, business people and members of the public administration that takes responsibility for human interventions in the earth system.

focus

The IESP borne by the for the Advancement of Science Earth System Science ( English earth system science ) at through theme-based conferences, workshops, seminars, lectures and publications. IESP acts as a mediator between experts, decision-makers and the general public to support an equally beneficial exchange of concerns and knowledge and to make scientifically sound recommendations for action. Its activities influence political debates by creating a platform for reflection on the sustainable development of economic and social systems in mutual relationship with terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems . IESP is looking for holistic and sustainably effective methods that contribute to remedying shortages in the areas of energy, water and food supply, medical care and education. The resulting increased resilience of society, economy and ecosystems contributes to maintaining the functionality of the earth system.

In the working context of IESP, the earth system is defined as the sum of the physical, chemical, biotic and social processes interacting on the planet. The atmosphere , hydrosphere and cryosphere are just as much a part of the earth system as the superordinate natural cycles ( carbon cycle , nitrogen cycle , sulfur cycle ) including the water cycle . All living organisms including humans and their activities are an integral part of the earth system. However, the growing human population changes the interaction of the components and dynamics of the system to a great extent.

One of the most pressing questions for the members of IESP is how the resilience of the earth system can be secured in the long term with a view to the natural foundations of life on our planet. This requires close cooperation between science, politics and society. The approaches that are developed in the context of the IESP events are available to decision-makers in political and economic institutions and the public as memoranda . For this purpose, IESP works on the principle of the Dahlem conferences .

history

IESP was founded in 2002 as the Institute of Advanced Studies on Sustainability (IoS) of the Cluster of Excellence Environmental Science and Technology . Building on the workshop "The Art of Dealing Wisely with the Planet Earth" (2008), the institute founded the International Expert Group on the Preservation of the Functionality of the Earth System as part of its activities. The results of this discussion are summarized in the "Zugspitze Declaration on Human Responsibility for the Life-Sustaining Functions of the Earth System".

Since 2008 IESP has been cooperating with the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) , which promotes innovative and high-risk research on interdisciplinary topics. The TUM-IAS brings TUM scientists together with experts from all over the world in order to initiate and implement projects together.

organization

IESP is a non-profit, registered association with its headquarters in Munich and an institute of the European Academy of Science and the Arts (EASA) . An elected board of directors represents and represents IESP externally, the general assembly acts as an advisory board. Institutionally, IESP is affiliated with the TUM-IAS in Garching .
