The Institute for Law and Finance (ILF) was founded in 2002 as a foundation of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main in cooperation with supervisory authorities, banks and law firms to conduct teaching and research in the field of law and finance.

The ILF organizes the LL.M Finance course, the LL.M International Finance, as well as a spring course "Corporate Law in Practice" and a summer course "Law of Banking and Capital Markets".

The managing director of the ILF is Andreas Cahn , Commerzbank Foundation Professorship, Goethe University Frankfurt. Theodor Baums , Professorship for Civil, Corporate & Capital Markets Law, Goethe University Frankfurt and Manfred Wandt, Director, Institute for Insurance Law, Goethe University Frankfurt are directors of the ILF.

LL.M. Finance course

The ILF offers a one-year post-graduate LL.M. (Finance) ("Master of Laws (Finance)") for graduates of law or economics. The German language is not a prerequisite for the program as all courses are taught in English.

Around 50 highly qualified students are accepted into the program each year. The program is aimed at students who are interested in combining theory and practice in the field of international law and finance. Work experience is recommended. The international spectrum of students is particularly remarkable: over 20 different countries are represented among the students. The lecturers mostly come from the business world, usually partners from large law firms.

Some of the courses open to students include: Law of Corporate Finance, Capital Markets and Securities Law, Risk and Reward: The Business of Financial Intermediation, Financial Markets and Institutions, Principles of International and Business "," Nuts and Bolts of M&A "," Accounting "," Fundamentals of Finance "and" Effective Negotiations ". In addition, the ILF offers a wide range of courses on topics relating to insurance and capital market law as well as project finance.

The program is taught in the newly built House of Finance on the Westend campus of Goethe University. It consists exclusively of seminars that take place on weekdays during the normal lecture period. In addition, a part-time study option is offered, the duration of the study is then extended to a maximum of two years.

Since 2008, an Erasmus Mundus program “Master in Transnational Trade Law and Finance” recognized by the European Union has been offered together with the universities of Deusto, Tilburg and Strasbourg.

ILF students are full members of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main who have completed the LL.M. Master certificate awards.

internship

The LL.M. Finance course includes a special seven- to eight-week internship with private and state institutions that support the ILF. These consist of leading international law firms, banks, auditors, the European Central Bank , as well as the Deutsche Bundesbank and the Financial Market Authority .

International exchange programs

The ILF offers exchange programs with Columbia Law School , FGV Direito Rio, and Amsterdam Business School.

LL.M. International Finance course

From October 2014, an additional LL.M. International Finance is offered to Asian students who want to study European finance law and finance in lectures exclusively in English.

Spring course

The ILF offers a two-week course on corporate law every March. The participants are young graduates with outstanding degrees who are about to start their careers and want to gain further qualifications. The course closes the gap between university education and practical application.

The spring course "Corporate Law in Advisory Practice plus Case Study", which the Institute for Law and Finance is offering in cooperation with well-known law firms such as Ashurst, Shearman & Sterling and White & Case, and in cooperation with JUVE and Lexxion, is intended to provide a comprehensive insight into practical issues convey important topics of corporate law advice.

Summer course

The ILF also organizes a two-week course on banking and capital markets law every year in August, which the institute conducts in cooperation with renowned law firms such as Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Hengeler Mueller and Linklaters. The speakers are representatives from major law firms and the banking industry.

Faculty

The faculty of the ILF consists of leading academics as well as experienced practitioners from European banks, international law firms, the European Central Bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank (German Central Bank) and the Financial Market Authority.

Bodies

The bodies of the ILF are the board of directors consisting of three professors from the Goethe University, the scientific advisory board, the board of trustees and the foundation board. The Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board is the former President of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet .

Location

The ILF is located in the House of Finance on the Westend campus of the Goethe University Frankfurt. The House of Finance brings together around 170 academics from the university departments of finance, money and currency, and business and capital market law.

The ILF's continuously open library (in the House of Finance) is based on the extensive collection of the former Institute for Foreign and International Business Law and contains more than 30,000 volumes and around 100 international journals. There is access to the Jurisdata, LexisNexis and WestLaw databases as well as specialist journals in legal, financial and corporate areas via the city and university library. The library is located near the city and university libraries. The German National Library is only a few minutes away. Students also have access to the library resources of the Deutsche Bundesbank.

The computer room of the House of Finance gives students access to the Internet and numerous databases around the clock. The building is fully equipped with WiFi. ILF students are full members of the university community and are entitled to use all of the university's facilities and facilities available to students.
