The institute, supported by the “Associação de Amizade Moçambique-Alemanha”, serves as a contact point for people who are interested in the German language and culture and who live in the city, especially for the numerous Mozambicans who worked or worked in the GDR in the 1980s had studied (" Madgermanes ").

history

The ICMA, opened in 1996 with the participation of the then Federal Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel and other official representatives, has been located in the center of Maputo at Rua Carlos Albers 89 since 2003. The aim is to provide visitors with German topics with a café, a library and a language learning center To portray culture. As a result, it gained a notable place in the cultural scene with its cultural offerings, also alongside other foreign cultural institutes such as the Centro Cultural Franco-Moçambicano and the Centro Cultural Americano Martin Luther King . Films are also regularly shown at the ICMA; it is considered one of the most important promoters of Mozambican film culture.

The institute was later given the status of a cooperation partner ("Goethe Center") of the Goethe Institute and thus access to the network of German cultural institutes. In addition, the ICMA receives funding and support from the German Embassy Maputo . A bilateral cultural agreement between Germany and Mozambique came into force in 2009. This collaboration was abandoned at the end of 2016. Regardless of this, the institution feels connected to the German-Mozambican cultural relations.
