The German Embassy Maputo is the official and highest diplomatic representation of Germany in the Republic of Mozambique . Detlev Wolter has been Germany's ambassador to the capital Maputo since 2016 .

history

After Mozambique gained independence from the colonial power Portugal in 1975, the two German states quickly established diplomatic relations with the former colony. The GDR set up an embassy in the Polana district on Avenida Francisco Orlando Magumbwe 976. Since German reunification and the end of the People's Republic of Mozambique in 1990, there has been an all-German diplomatic mission in Maputo. After reunification, the state office of the Society for Technical Cooperation (gtz) moved into the building of the GDR embassy and is now the seat of the merged, federally owned Society for International Cooperation (giz).

In 2004, 40 Madgermanes briefly occupied the embassy to emphasize their demand for the repayment of allegedly outstanding wages from the GDR government.

location

Building of the German embassy in Rua Damião de Góis 506

The embassy is located at number 506 on Rua Damião de Góis , in the Sommerschield diplomatic district . The embassies of Italy and Algeria are to the right and left of the German embassy in the same street as the US, French and Indian embassies.

The Rua Damião de Góis is a smaller parallel street to the Avenida Kenneth Kaunda and bends just before the transverse Avenida Julius Nyerere without encountering it.

tasks

The main purpose of the embassy is to represent and represent the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mozambique and as a contact point for the citizens of the Federal Republic. The German embassy in Maputo has five departments: Political Department, Economic Department, Consular Department, Cultural Department and Press Department. Among other things, the embassy supported the German-Mozambican cultural center Instituto Cultural Moçambique-Alemanha (ICMA).

Two officials from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) are also part of the embassy's staff. They support and coordinate German development cooperation in the country, as Mozambique is one of the priority countries for German development cooperation. In 2014, the Federal Republic supported the Mozambican state with around 60 million euros, primarily in the areas of education, decentralization and sustainable economic development in the provinces of Manica , Sofala and Inhambane .
