The German embassy in Monrovia

The German Embassy Monrovia is the official diplomatic representation of the Federal Republic of Germany in the West African state of Liberia . The current ambassador is Hubert J. Jäger , who succeeded Ralph Timmermann .

Plant and building

The embassy is located east of the center of the Liberian capital Monrovia in the Congo Town district on Tubman Boulevard. On the 46,136 square meter embassy area, which borders directly on the Atlantic Ocean in the south , there is not only the office building but also the ambassador's residence, several service apartments and several ancillary buildings. The Nigerian Embassy (Nigerian House) is in the immediate vicinity.

The plans planned by the Federal Building Directorate between January 1962 and November 1964 and implemented by the Italian company Vianini Ltd. Due to the humid tropical climate , the flat roof buildings are generously distributed over the site to allow the incoming sea breeze plenty of space to spread out. The architect in charge was Hans Seidlitz. The construction cost 5.19 million German marks .

The central building of the embassy site is the two-story office, which is set back on the north side of the area facing the street. While the ground floor, which is open to Tubman Boulevard, serves as an entrance area and covered parking area, the raised upper floor is where the offices are located. As a design element and to protect against the sun, the upper floor is clad with horizontal, white metal slats. This creates a free space around the entire upper floor between the offset sun visors and the outside wall of the building. The other embassy buildings are also provided with white metal panels. On the east side, an annex building, angled towards the street, adjoins the office. There is a courtyard in front of the central building, which is separated from the street by a wall with a gate.

To the west and south of the office are the other buildings of the embassy, in addition to some company buildings, the bungalows for the employees, which were laid out with terraces facing the sea . A palm grove of around 23,000 square meters forms the center of the property and shields the residence from the other buildings.

The ambassador's residence is in the south of the site, right by the sea. On the north side, a representative canopy over the entrance characterizes the one-story building. The south side, which is open with large windows, offers a direct view of the Atlantic.

Closure during the Civil War

Due to the civil war in Liberia and the politically unstable situation, the embassy staff was withdrawn on June 27, 1997. The German embassy in Accra in Ghana was henceforth responsible for Liberia as the diplomatic representation of the Federal Republic of Germany. A German living in Monrovia took care of the abandoned site on behalf of the Foreign Office .

In order to take into account the political changes after the end of the civil war in 2003 and to contribute to the stabilization and reconstruction of the country, Germany sent Thomas Freudenhammer as the first EU country to send an ambassador to Liberia again in 2005 . The German representation was reopened on October 24, 2005.

To date, the embassy in Monrovia has not performed any legal or consular functions , apart from emergency aid . In addition, no visas are issued. The German embassy in Accra is still responsible for this.
