The German Embassy Athens is the official and highest diplomatic representation of Germany in the Republic of Greece .

history

The first German representation in Greece was the Prussian embassy, which became the German embassy in Athens when the German Empire was founded in 1871 . In 1917 another building was built and rented out at Akademias No. 19 for future use (after the war-related expropriation, the building was returned in 1955 and sold to a bank). In 1924, the embassy building (today the seat of the American Women's Organization of Greece ) was sold and a tenement house in a prestigious location on Leoforos Vasilissis Sofias No. 4. Due to the need for space, additional floors soon had to be rented .

Due to the war, diplomatic relations were discontinued in 1945, and the British military administration in Greece refused embassy status. Greece opened an embassy in Bonn in 1950, followed by the Federal Republic in 1951 with an embassy in Athens. Greece was thus one of twelve countries with which the Federal Republic began diplomatic relations. The rented rooms at Isiodou Street No. 22 were expanded several times, in 1959 the move to the current address Loukianou No. 3 followed. The building was bought in 1969 and demolished after earthquake damage and the purchase of the additional neighboring property and rebuilt from 1983, only in 1993 however, the building was fully occupied.
