Ernst Reichel

Ernst Reichel (born July 28, 1960 in Lagos , Nigeria ) is a German diplomat and was the German ambassador to Ukraine from July 2016 to July 2019 . He has been ambassador to the German embassy in Athens since August 2019 .

Life

After graduating from high school , he studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and graduated with the first state examination and 1987 with the second state examination. In the meantime, he received his doctorate in 1986 with a dissertation on the subject of state asylum law “within the framework of international law”. On the importance of international law for the interpretation of German asylum law .

He then joined the foreign service in 1988 and, after completing his career examination in 1990, initially worked as an employee at the Consulate General in Saint Petersburg and then from 1992 to 1996 as a consultant for Russia in the Foreign Office . After working at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City , he first worked in the legal department in 1999 and then in 2000 as deputy head of unit for EU policy and institutional issues at the Foreign Office.

After being between 2003 and 2007. Deputy Head of the NATO Secretary-General's Jaap de Hoop Scheffer was, he was Head of Unit for Russia, Ukraine , Belarus , Moldova and the Eastern Partnership at the Foreign Office.

In July 2011 Ernst Reichel became ambassador to Kosovo . From July 2013 to July 2016 he was the representative for Southeast Europe, Turkey and the EFTA states at the Foreign Office in Berlin and then until July 2019 the German ambassador to Ukraine.

He has been ambassador in Athens / Greece since August 2019.
