The German Embassy Pyongyang is the official diplomatic representation of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The German ambassador in Pyongyang has been Pit Heltmann since 2018 .
building
The embassy building is located in the North Korean capital Pyongyang in the Munsu-dong district of the Taedonggang-guyŏk district . It previously served as the GDR embassy . After reunification, the building served as the Swedish embassy . In addition to the German and Swedish embassies , the British embassy is currently located in the building complex . For use by the Federal Republic of Germany, it was extensively refurbished and renovated both inside and outside.
history
The GDR had diplomatic relations with North Korea since 1949. The last ambassador of the GDR was Klaus Zorn . After the reunification in Germany, the GDR embassy in Pyongyang was converted into a permanent representation of the Federal Republic on January 21, 1991 and an embassy on March 1, 2001. The Kingdom of Sweden acted as the protecting power until regular diplomatic relations were established in 2001 . Diplomatic relations between the two countries have existed since 2001. Official visits by a German delegation at ministerial level have not yet taken place in North Korea. Nor has a North Korean delegation been welcomed in Germany.
When the Korean conflict intensified in 2013 , North Korea recommended, along with other states, to the Federal Republic of Germany to vacate their embassy in Pyongyang, as it could no longer guarantee their security in the event of an escalation from April 10th. However, Germany announced that it initially did not want to withdraw its eight diplomats in North Korea.
