History of diplomatic relations

January 28, 2012 marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and Australia. Germany and Australia can look back on a shared successful history. Over the years, German-Australian relations have been deepened and intensified in many areas.

In 1879, the opening of a consulate general in Sydney was first decided under the Reich Chancellor and Foreign Minister Otto von Bismarck . The first consul general from 1879 was Richard Krauel . From 1897 to 1900 Peter Franz Kempermann was the German consul general in Sydney. After the outbreak of the First World War, diplomatic relations were broken off and the consulate general in Sydney was initially closed. In 1924 the consulate general was resumed in Melbourne , which moved back to Sydney four years later. With the beginning of the Second World War , the Consulate General was closed in 1939. After a few years without any communication, diplomatic relations were resumed in 1952. Although the reactions to the arrival of the first West German ambassador, Walther Hess, were controversial and the reception in Sydney after the Second World War was accompanied by protests, he succeeded in redefining German-Australian relations. Since it took some time to find a suitable building in Canberra, the German embassy in Sydney continued to operate. It wasn't until 1955 that the embassy finally moved to the capital of Australia, Canberra. A consulate general was established in Sydney in place of the embassy.

The establishment of diplomatic relations between the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and Australia began on December 22, 1972 with Ambassador Hans Richter. Due to the accession of the GDR to the Federal Republic of Germany, diplomatic relations were terminated on October 3, 1990. The complete dissolution of the GDR embassy in Canberra lasted until mid-1992.

On January 28, 2013, Foreign Ministers Guido Westerwelle and Bob Carr signed the Berlin-Canberra Memorandum of Understanding on a strategic partnership on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of German-Australian relations. This covers areas such as foreign and security policy, economy and trade, science and research, energy and climate protection or development cooperation. Germany and Australia plan to further intensify their cooperation in the future.

In April 2015, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott convened a German-Australian advisory group. The group is led by the Minister of State in the Federal Foreign Office , Maria Böhmer - co-chair is the Australian Finance Minister Mathias Cormann .
