Joachim Elm

Joachim Elm (born September 9, 1931 in Gera ; † May 6, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German diplomat . He was the GDR's ambassador to Australia , New Zealand , Fiji and Vanuatu .

Life

Elm ended after high school to study law at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig as a graduate lawyer.

From 1954 Elm worked in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA), initially in the Law and Contracts Department, then from 1956 in the consular department as an employee and from 1963 as a division manager for fundamental issues. From 1964 to 1965 he was sector manager in the Northern Europe department and from 1965 to 1969 he worked as a consul and second secretary in the GDR trade agency in Finland . Between 1969 and 1973 he was acting head of the Northern Europe department at the MfAA. 1973/1974 he worked as counselor at the embassy of the GDR in Helsinki . In 1974 Elm opened the embassy in the USA as chargé d'affaires and was counselor there until 1977. From 1977 to 1982 he worked as a sector manager in the USA / Canada / Japan department of the MfAA. In 1982 he became ambassador to Canberra and was second accredited in New Zealand , Fiji and, from 1987, also in Vanuatu. After finishing his work as ambassador, he worked from 1989 to 1990 as a research assistant in the Consular Affairs Department of the MfAA.

Elm was a member of the SED .
