States that recognized the GDR until 1970

This is the list of the ambassadors of the German Democratic Republic (1949–1990) . It also contains all permanent representatives at supranational and intergovernmental organizations and the Federal Republic of Germany . The list is structured according to the administrative districts of the GDR embassies from 1990. For an overview of the ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Germany, see the list of German ambassadors . The highest-ranking representative in the respective host country is always named, provided that there was diplomatic relations with this country and a diplomatic representation was set up.

In 1989 the GDR had diplomatic relations with 139 countries. The Hallstein Doctrine had demanded that the Federal Republic of Germany set the host countries to a German state as diplomatic representative for Germany as a whole. Before the establishment of diplomatic relations, the GDR had representations with different statuses in several states (trade representation, trade mission, economic and trade mission, consulate general , diplomatic mission, etc.).
