Eckhard Bibow

Eckhard Bibow (born May 2, 1930 in Quassel ) is a former German diplomat . He was 1986-1990 Ambassador of the GDR in Switzerland .

Life

Bibow, a member of the SED , was a member of the GDR's diplomatic service from the early 1960s. In 1963 he was temporarily chargé d'affaires in Vietnam , from 1963 to 1966 secretary at the GDR embassy in Hanoi . From 1967 to 1971 Bibow was an employee of the Chamber for Foreign Trade and from 1971 to 1973 head of the representation of the Chamber for Foreign Trade in Rome . From 1976 to 1979 he was Deputy Head of the Western Europe Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR , then Counselor at the Embassy in Paris . Bibow was ambassador in Bern from September 1986 . During Bibow's time as ambassador in Bern, two important meetings took place between representatives of Switzerland and the GDR. In November 1986, head of training, Roger Mabillard , one of the highest-ranking Swiss military, visited the GDR's National People's Army for a whole week . Later a delegation from the Swiss National Council was invited to Berlin by the People's Chamber of the GDR. Bibow resigned from his service in Bern on September 9, 1990 and went into early retirement.

Bibow was a member of the PDS and is now part of the Die Linke party .
