Helmut Matthes

Helmut Matthes (born December 2, 1935 ; died July 7, 2019 ) was a German social scientist and diplomat .

Life

Matthes studied economics in Leipzig and received his doctorate in 1963 . His habilitation took place in 1966. From 1964 to 1972 he worked as a professor at the Institute for Political Economy at the Technical University of Leuna-Merseburg . From 1973 to 1976 he was the GDR's ambassador in Tanzania . After that he was a professor at the Institute for International Relations at the Academy for State and Law in Potsdam until 1982 and received an award as “Honored University Teacher of the People”.

From 1983 to 1988 he was the GDR's ambassador to Mozambique . In his diplomatic work in the context of second accreditations and as head of delegation, he was also active in the Seychelles , Madagascar , Lesotho and Mauritius . He then worked again as a university lecturer in Potsdam from 1989 to 1991.

Matthes was a co-founder of the biennial meeting of the "Friends of Mozambique".
