Gerhard Kuenzel

Gerhard Künzel (born May 30, 1923 in Röhrsdorf ) is a former German diplomat and SED functionary. He was the ambassador of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in Nigeria , Benin and Equatorial Guinea .

Life

Künzel attended elementary school, learned the trade of machine fitter and worked in the profession. He took part in the Second World War as a radio operator in a communications unit . From 1950 to 1952 he was the head of a state- owned company . Künzel became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and held leading positions in SED district leadership and in the SED district leadership in Karl-Marx-Stadt . Until 1955 he was secretary of the SED district leadership in Glauchau . Künzel completed his studies in the years 1955 to 1958 as a graduate social scientist. He then acted as second secretary until 1960 and first secretary of the SED district leadership in Plauen / Stadt (successor to Rudolf Krasselt) until 1964 . Most recently he was head of the party organs department from 1965 to 1972 and a member of the SED district leadership in Karl-Marx-Stadt from 1967 to 1971.

From 1972 he worked in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA) in East Berlin . In July 1973 he was appointed ambassador to Nigeria by the chairman of the GDR State Council , Walter Ulbricht . In September 1973 he presented the credentials to Yakubu Gowon, head of Nigeria's Federal Military Government . From November 1974 he was second accredited in Dahomey (from 1975 Benin) and from November 1975 in Equatorial Guinea. In August 1976 he ended his activity as ambassador and then left the MfAA.

Künzel is married and has two children.
