Gerhard Witten

Gerhard Witten (born January 12, 1933 in Neubrandenburg ) is a former German diplomat . He was the ambassador of the German Democratic Republic in Peru and Bolivia .

Life

After graduating from high school, Witten studied at the Workers and Farmers Faculty in Greifswald from 1954 to 1957 at the German Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam-Babelsberg , graduating as a political scientist.

From 1957 he was an employee in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA). From 1958 to 1959 he was an attaché at the GDR embassy in Beijing . From 1959 to 1961 he worked in the China Sector of the First Non-European Department ( Far East ) and then from 1961 to 1965 of the Sixth Non-European Department ( Latin America ). From 1965 to 1969 he was second secretary, from 1971 to 1974 counselor at the embassy of the GDR in Havana . On August 18, 1972, in the presence of Witten, the Ernst Thälmann Monument was unveiled on Ernst Thälmann Island in the Bay of Pigs . 1974/1975 he was deputy head of the Latin America department at the MfAA. From September 17, 1975 to November 1980, he was the GDR's ambassador to Peru, and from December 16, 1976 to November 1980, also to Bolivia. From 1980 to 1982 he was Sector Head for All Latin American Issues and from 1982 to 1990 Deputy Head of Latin America at the MfAA.

Witten was a member of the SED .
