Erich Butzke

Erich Butzke (born August 22, 1920 in Berlin ; † April 11, 1988 ) was a German diplomat . He was the first GDR - Ambassador in Portugal .

Life

Butzke, the son of an employee, attended elementary school and high school. After graduating from high school , he began a commercial apprenticeship. From 1941 to 1944 he did military service as a private in the Wehrmacht , but was not taken prisoner.

After the Second World War , he first worked as an editor. In 1945 Butzke joined the KPD , from 1946 he was a member of the SED . From 1947 to 1951 he studied at the Humboldt University in Berlin and graduated with a degree in economics. Butzke then worked as a research assistant at the Berlin School of Economics until 1952 . There he was promoted to Dr. rer. oec. PhD (Dissertation: Problems on the way of the Asian nation states to economic independence. Shown using the example of the development of Burma with special consideration of the foreign trade relations with the GDR ). In May 1952 he was appointed head of department at the Ministry for Trade and Supply of the GDR.

He then worked in the diplomatic service of the GDR. From 1959 to 1963 he was deputy head of the commercial agency in Indonesia , and from 1964 to 1966 in Brazil . 1967/1968 he headed the Latin America department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA). From 1969 to 1972 Butzke headed the Consulate General in Dar es Salaam . After Tanzania's diplomatic recognition of the GDR on December 18, 1972, the GDR Consulate General in Dar es Salaam was converted into an embassy and Butzke was appointed Chargé d'affaires of the GDR in the United Republic of Tanzania. From 1973 to 1974 he worked again in the MfAA. From August 1974 to May 1977 he was the first ambassador of the GDR in Lisbon .

Butzke died at the age of 67 and was buried in the central cemetery in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde .
