Erich Meske

Erich Meske (born September 18, 1932 ; † 2009 ) was a German diplomat . He was the GDR's ambassador to numerous African countries.

Life

Meske was born into a working-class family and learned to be a carpenter. After attending the workers and farmers faculty , he passed his Abitur in 1956 and then studied foreign policy from 1956 to 1960 at the German Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam-Babelsberg .

He worked in the diplomatic service of the GDR: first as counselor in Damascus , then in 1975/1976 as counselor in Tehran . From July 1976 to 1978 he was ambassador of the GDR in Tunis , from 1980 to 1985 ambassador in the Malian capital Bamako . From there he was also responsible as ambassador for Mauritania (1980–1985), Niger (1981–1985) and Burkina Faso (1982–1985). From 1986 to 1990 he was ambassador in Bissau , where he received a second accreditation for the Gambia .
