Kurt Nier
Kurt Nier (born July 23, 1927 in Antoniwald near Gablonz an der Neisse ) is a former German diplomat and politician ( SED ). From 1973 to 1989 he was Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the GDR .

Nier attended elementary , civil and commercial school and completed a commercial training in 1943/44. On April 20, 1944, like many Hitler Youths born in 1926 and 1927, he was accepted into the NSDAP . In 1944/45 he did military service in the Wehrmacht . He experienced the end of the Second World War in a hospital .
In 1945/46 he initially worked as a forest worker before moving to the Soviet Zone . In 1946 he became a member of the SED. From 1947 to 1950 he was an employee in the Wernigerode district administration . In 1950/51 he completed a short course at the German Administration Academy in Forst Zinna .
From 1951 he was an employee of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA). From 1951 to 1955 he was the main consultant in the Asia - Africa - America department of the MfAA. In 1956 he worked at the GDR trade agency in New Delhi , 1956/57 at the GDR embassy in Budapest . From 1957 to 1959 he worked again in India. From 1960 to 1962 Nier headed the GDR consulate general in the Indonesian capital Jakarta . From 1968 to 1973 he was - with the rank of ambassador - head of the Northern Europe department at the MfAA. From 1973 to 1989 Nier was Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the GDR, most recently responsible for Western Europe , FRG , West Berlin , USA , Canada , Australia and Japan .
