Gerald Möckel

Gerald Möckel (born September 17, 1935 in Chemnitz ; † May 1, 2012 in Friedland ) was a German diplomat . He was the GDR's ambassador to Nicaragua and Ecuador .

Life

Möckel, the son of a lathe operator, studied foreign policy with a focus on Latin America at the Institute for International Relations in Moscow from 1954 to 1960 after graduating from high school and graduated with a degree in political science.

From 1960 Möckel worked for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA), from 1961 in the 5th non-European department (Latin America) of the MfAA. Between 1962 and 1967 he was the Spanish editor of the journal Foreign Policy Correspondence , which was published by the MfAA's main press department. From 1967 to 1968 he was an attaché at the embassy of the GDR in Havana . Between 1968 and 1970 he worked as Sector Head Central America in the 5th Non-European Department of the MfAA. From 1970 to 1973 he was the deputy head of the GDR commercial agency in Uruguay . He then worked from 1973 to 1979 in Department IV (International Relations) of the SED Central Committee. His main focus there were the political parties in Latin America. From 1980 to 1983 he was the first ambassador of the GDR in Managua . Between 1983 and 1987 he acted again as sector manager in the Latin America department of the MfAA, this time responsible for all-Latin American issues. From 1987 to 1990 he finally worked as the GDR's ambassador in Quito .
