Novomyrhorod (Ukrainian Новомиргород ; Russian Novomirgorod ) is a city in the Kirovohrad Oblast in Ukraine with about 12,300 inhabitants (2016).
geography
The city is located around 50 km northwest of the capital of this oblast, Kropywnyzkyj on the river Velyka Wys .
In addition to the actual city, the city council also consists of the villages Byrsulowe (Бирзулове) and Likarewe (Лікареве).
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1740 as winter quarters for Cossacks at the estate "Tresjahy" (Тресяги). In the following years the area was settled by settlers from Myrhorod and from 1752 the settlement called Nowyj Myrhorod ("New Myrhorod") was the capital of the province of New Serbia . In 1773 it received town charter, since 1923 Nowomyrhorod was the capital of the okrug Jelisawetgrad, in 1959 the neighboring town of Slatopil / Slatopol was incorporated and the town at the same time was the administrative seat of the Nowomyrhorod Rajon of the same name .
