Novoarchanhelsk ( Ukrainian Новоархангельськ ; Russian Новоархангельск Novoarchangelsk ) is an urban-type settlement in Kirovohrad Oblast , Ukraine with about 7,600 inhabitants. It is located on the river Synjucha (Синюха). On the opposite bank of the river is the village of Torhowyzja .
Community structure
In addition to the urban-type settlement, the municipality also includes the villages of Shurivka (Журівка), Komysheve (Комишеве), Losuwatka (Лозуватка), Synjucha (Синюха) and Soldatske (Солдатське).
history
The settlement was founded in 1742 by the Cossacks of the Mirhorod Regiment Zvenihorodskyi (Звенигородський). The main inhabitants of the settlement were the Cossacks and refugees. In 1876 there were 60 farms here.
The council government in Novoarchanhelsk was proclaimed in January 1918, but at the beginning of April the place was occupied by Austro-German troops and later replaced by the Petljura supporters. After it was broken up, the Soviet was restored in March 1919. In August of the same year, however, the village was occupied by Denikin supporters ; the landlords returned and there was a renewed redistribution of power as well as pogroms against the Jewish population. In January 1920, the Red Army drove the Denikin people out of the village, but skirmishes continued for some time with the remnants of the Petljura supporters who were still active in the region. In the spring of 1920 the power of the Bolsheviks was finally asserted.
The fighting of the Second World War reached the place in early August 1941. During the German occupation there was a local underground movement as well as partisan detachments made up of prisoners of war and the local population . In mid-March 1944, Novoarchanhelsk was retaken by the Red Army.
Since 1957 the place has the status of an urban-type settlement .
