Oleksandriwka ( Ukrainian Олександрівка ; Russian Александровка Alexandrowka ) is an urban-type settlement in the center of Ukraine with about 9,000 inhabitants (2016) and the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
geography
The settlement is located on the banks of the Tyasmyn , a tributary of the Dnieper , in the north of the Kirovohrad Oblast on the border with the Cherkassy Oblast . The Kropywnyzkyj oblast center is located 54 km south of the village , 15 km northwest of Kamjanka and 48 km northwest of Smila .
The settlement council municipality with a total size of 8.656 km² includes, in addition to Oleksandriwka, the villages of Krasnopilka ( Китайгород ) and Severyniwka ( Северинівка ). The settlement has a favorable traffic situation on the highways N 01 and N 14 .
In 1876 the city's train station , named after the political and social activist Ivan Ivanovich Funduklej , was opened. There are bus connections from the village to Kiev , Kirovohrad, Cherkassy , Kryvyi Rih , Shovti Vody and Mykolaiv .
history
Oleksandriwka was founded in the middle of the 17th century and was first mentioned in writing in 1785. In the second half of the 19th century there was a rapid growth of the Jewish population in the village. According to the 1897 census, the city had 4,366 inhabitants of whom 74% were Jews. The village was occupied by Wehrmacht troops from August 5, 1941 to January 8, 1944 . During the German occupation, 637 people, including many Jews, were shot.
In 1957, Oleksandrivka received urban-type settlement status. In the 1970s, the Druzhba route , a section of the Soyuz gas pipeline and a compressor station were built here by young workers from the former GDR . The settlement of the German workers still exists today.
