Smoline ( Ukrainian Смоліне ; Russian Смолино Smolino ) is an urban-type settlement in Kirovohrad Oblast in central Ukraine with around 9,500 inhabitants (2014).

The settlement, founded in 1976, was named after the geologist Nikolai Smolin (Ukrainian: Миколи Смоліна / Russian: Николая Смолина ) and is a center for the extraction and processing of uranium in Ukraine.

The settlement is located on the bank of the Kylten ( Кильтень ), a 39 km long tributary of the Welyka Wys in Mala Wyska district 79 km west of the Kropywnyzkyj oblast center and 31 km west of the Mala Wyska district center . South of the town which runs highway M 12 / E 50 , of Striy according Znamianka leads.

Economy

The VostGOK , the biggest Uranerzbergbau- and processing plants of Ukraine, based in Zhovti Vody operates in since 28 April 1972, a uranium mine .

In October 2010 an agreement was made to build a plant for processing uranium ore . Construction of the nuclear fuel production facility began on October 4, 2012.

The plant will start producing fuel for nuclear reactors of the VVER-1000 type common in Ukraine , in order to ensure security of energy supply in Ukraine.

The first construction phase should be completed by 2014. In 2015 the plant with a capacity of 400 tons of uranium per year is to be put into operation. From 2017, after completion of the third construction phase, the plant should reach its full capacity. According to preliminary estimates, the total construction costs are estimated at more than six billion US dollars.
