Herbert Merkel

Herbert Merkel (* 1910 ; † January 7, 1967 in Rome ) was a German foreign trade official and diplomat of the GDR . He was Vice-President of the Chamber of Foreign Trade (KfA) and head of commercial agencies in Paris and Rome.

Life

Merkel was a member of the SED . In 1954 he became first deputy director in DIA -Elektrotechnik. From 1956 to 1962 he was head of the representation of the Chamber for Foreign Trade of the GDR in Paris. In February 1960 he was appointed Vice President of the Chamber for Foreign Trade of the GDR. As such, he stayed from February 8 to March 1, 1960 for exploratory talks in Havana and signed an agreement on goods and payments on February 29, 1960 with the President of the Cuban National Bank, Che Guevara . The treaty also provided for the establishment of commercial agencies for the Republic of Cuba in Berlin and the GDR in Havana. On October 28, 1964, he was re-elected as Vice-President of the Chamber of Foreign Trade.

From February 1965 until his death he was a commercial councilor and head of the representation of the Chamber for Foreign Trade of the GDR in Italy (successor to Wilhelm Knapp ). Merkel died at the age of 57. He was married.
