Peter Lorf

Peter Lorf (born August 23, 1932 in Berlin ; † December 4, 2019 ) was a German journalist and diplomat . He was the GDR's ambassador to Spain , Mexico , Costa Rica and Panama, as well as deputy minister for culture .

Life

The son of a working-class family graduated from high school in 1950 and then worked from 1951 to 1954 as a proofreader, later as an assistant editor at the Kultur und Progress publishing house. From 1954 to 1957 he studied at the German Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam-Babelsberg . After the state examination he worked for the SED newspaper Neues Deutschland , including as a correspondent in Geneva and from November 1962 as a correspondent in Bonn , where he was officially accredited by the Bundestag . From 1966 Lorf headed the foreign policy department at New Germany .

Lorf finally entered the diplomatic service and in 1967 became head of the press and information department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA). As such, he was responsible for public relations on the GDR side at the Stoph-Brandt meetings in Erfurt and Kassel in 1970 . Lorf was the GDR's first ambassador to Spain from 1973 to 1975 and ambassador to Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama from February 1978 to December 1982. He then worked with the rank of ambassador as head of the department for international cultural relations at the MfAA. His last position was from May 1986 to 1989 as Deputy Minister of Culture of the GDR.

He wrote several books under pseudonyms, the book Volcanoes on the Caribbean Sea was published under his real name . Peter Lorf lived with his wife in Schönwalde-Glien ( Brandenburg ) until his death . Before that he lived in Berlin. In his home town of Schönwalde he owned his own advertising agency, Pro Service. He passed away on December 4, 2019.
