Karl Speiser

Karl Speiser (born June 22, 1914 in Augsburg , † after 1989) was a German diplomat . He was the ambassador of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the Mongolian People's Republic (MVR).

Life

Speiser learned the trade of printer after attending elementary school . During the Second World War he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and had to do military service. He defected to the Red Army and was taken prisoner by the Soviets .

After his return to the Soviet zone of occupation in Germany, he took part in the development of the country in Dresden . He became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and worked as a foreign trade official after the GDR was founded. In May 1951 he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA), where he initially worked in the Western Europe department (responsible for Great Britain). As the main advisor in Department I (Neighboring Countries) of the MfAA, he prepared Otto Grotewohl's first visit to Prague in 1956 . He then worked at the embassy of the GDR in Moscow and from 1958 to January 1961 served as counselor and first secretary at the embassy of the GDR in Prague. On January 10, 1961, the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED decided to act as ambassador to the MVR and on February 9, 1961, he was appointed ambassador to the MVR by the Chairman of the GDR State Council , Walter Ulbricht . On March 2, 1961, he presented the Mongolian head of state, Jamsrangiin Sambuu , with his credentials. He held this position until he was recalled in September 1964. He then worked in the administration of the MfAA, most recently as deputy head of department. In June 1989 he was retired and was allowed the title of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary a. D. continue.
