Hans Schauer

Hans Schauer (born August 12, 1926 in Hanover ; † 2010 ) was a German diplomat who was last ambassador to Australia between 1985 and 1991 .

Life

After graduating from high school in World War II, Schauer was drafted into military service in the Wehrmacht in 1943 and was subsequently taken prisoner of war, from which he was released in 1946. He then began to study law at the Georg-August University of Göttingen , which he completed after the first state examination in 1953 with the second state examination. He also closed on 30 July 1953 his promotion to Dr. jur. with a dissertation with the title The development of the concept of proportional representation in the state-theoretical-political discussion at the University of Göttingen.

In 1953, Schauer joined the senior foreign service and was initially an employee of Department 1 (Personnel and Administration) at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn and then between 1955 and 1958 at the Embassy in Sweden . After a post at the Consulate General in Zurich from 1958 to 1959 , he worked at the Embassy in Switzerland between 1959 and 1962 . In 1962 he was seconded to the Office of the Federal President and was there until 1965 as personal assistant to the head of the Office of the Federal President, Hans-Heinrich Herwarth von Bittenfeld . After initially when he 1965-1970 Counselor First Class , as well as from 26 August 1968 as Counselor at the Embassy in the United Kingdom was active in September 1970 was followed by a new secondment. Most recently he succeeded Wilhelm Fabricius as ambassador to Australia in August 1985 . As such, he was also in Nauru , Papua New Guinea , Solomon Islands and Vanuatu accredited . He held the post of ambassador until he retired in 1991 and was then replaced by Franz Keil .

After his retirement, Schauer became involved in the Association of Free Citizens (BfB) founded by Manfred Brunner on January 1, 1994 . Shortly before the European elections on June 12, 1994 , however, he resigned as a board member, together with Erwin Wickert , who was previously ambassador to Romania and most recently from 1976 to 1980 ambassador to the People's Republic of China , and Ralph Gutmann , amid massive criticism of the party's course.
