The German Embassy Dakar is the diplomatic representation of Germany in the Republic of Senegal . Stephan Röken has been Germany's ambassador in Dakar since August 2017 .
District
The administrative district includes the countries of Senegal, Gambia , Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde . The head of the representation is accredited in all four countries as an ambassador based in Dakar. Depending on the countries of the district, the embassy has to correspond in the languages French, English and Portuguese. In Banjul and in Bissau , there is the embassy liaison offices and in Mindelo (Cape Verde) an honorary consulate .
Embassy building
The embassy resides in the Dakar Plateau district in a three-storey building on corner lot 20, avenue Pasteur , corner of rue Mermoz, which is enclosed by massive enclosing walls .
The embassy is centrally located in the government district: the Assemblée nationale (National Assembly) is 250 meters away and the Palais de la République , the official residence of the President , is 600 meters away .
history
Even before Senegal's independence, the Federal Republic of Germany opened a consulate in Dakar in what was then French West Africa on December 15, 1955, under the direction of Consul Walter Reichhold , which was also responsible for Togo , Gambia and Guinea-Bissau .
Senegal and the Federal Republic of Germany established diplomatic relations on September 23, 1960; Relations with the GDR followed on August 22, 1973.
The former consulate in Dakar became the official residence of the first ambassador , Walter Reichhold .
