Ralph Timmermann

Ralph Timmermann is a German diplomat . He heads the department for East Africa and the Horn of Africa in the Federal Foreign Office. From 2013 to 2016 he was ambassador to Liberia . He has been ambassador to Malabo / Equatorial Guinea since September 2019

Life

After graduating from high school in 1978, Timmermann began studying economics at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel and the University of Hamburg , which he completed in 1983 with a degree in economics . In the meantime he completed a study visit to the London School of Economics and Political Science with the support of a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) .

In 1988 he began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and, after graduating in 1989, joined the Foreign Office . First, as a Legation Councilor, he was Country Officer in the Department for Latin America of Political Department 3 of the Foreign Office and then from 1990 to 1993 cultural officer at the Consulate General in Istanbul , before he was Country Officer in the Africa Department of the Foreign Office between 1993 and 1995. After being employed from 1995 to 1998 as a press and political advisor at the Consulate General in São Paulo , between 1998 and 2002 he was the permanent representative of the Ambassador to Angola .

In 2002 Timmermann returned to the Foreign Office in Berlin and was there from 2003 to 2007 as a lecturer in the Legation Council, Deputy Head of the Department for Economic and Development Issues of the United Nations, and subsequently between 2007 and 2010 initially as permanent representative of the Ambassador in Myanmar and then from 2010 to 2013 Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to the Philippines .

On September 1, 2013, Timmermann became ambassador to Liberia and thus successor to Bodo Schaff . In this role, he and the Federal Government's Special Representative for Ebola , Walter Johannes Lindner , visited facilities of the DRK and the German Armed Forces. In 2016 he was replaced by Hubert Jäger .

After three years in the Foreign Office as Head of Division for East Africa, Timmermann went to Equatorial Guinea as Ambassador in September 2019.
