Detlev Wolter

Detlev Wolter (born December 6, 1957 in Mainz ) is a German diplomat . He has been the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Mozambique since October 2016 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1976, Wolter began studying law at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , which he completed in 1983 with the first state examination in law. He then completed postgraduate studies in international relations at Columbia University in New York City between 1983 and 1985 , which he completed with a Master of International Affairs .

In 1986 Wolter began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and, after graduating in 1988, initially worked at the Foreign Office in Bonn and then between 1989 and 1992 at the embassy in Russia . He then acted as permanent representative of the ambassador in Zambia between 1992 and 1993 and then worked again at the headquarters of the Foreign Office from 1993 to 1996, before being employed at the permanent representation to the European Union in Brussels between 1996 and 1999 .

After his return to Germany in 1999, Wolter found another position in the Foreign Office, where he last worked between 2000 and 2003 as head of department. During this time he completed in 2003 his doctorate Dr. jur. at the Humboldt University in Berlin with the dissertation Fundamentals of “Common Security” in Space according to universal international law. The principle of the peaceful use of space in the light of the structural principle of international law from the “common heritage of humanity” , in which he dealt with questions of space law , the 1967 Outer Space Treaty and questions of collective security .

He then moved to the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City in 2003 , where he worked until 2005. From 2005 to 2007 he was head of department for fundamental questions of EU politics and European law in the Brandenburg State Chancellery and from 2007 to 2010 permanent representative of the ambassador to Saudi Arabia . After serving again as Head of Division in the Foreign Office from 2010 to 2013, he was Consul General in Donetsk between 2013 and 2015 .

In September 2015 Wolter succeeded Helmut Kulitz as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Chad . A year later, in October 2016, he became the German ambassador to Mozambique.
