Interim Committee

The Interim Committee was a secret committee of experts founded in May 1945 by US Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson with the task of advising then US President Harry S. Truman on all questions relating to nuclear energy . The interim committee consisted of many important people from the fields of politics , science and industry . The first major task of this organization was to drop the atomic bombs on Japan . Later, the main focus was on legislation to control and regulate nuclear energy. In 1946 the so-called "Provisional Committee" was established by theUnited States Atomic Energy Commission replaced.

Composition of the Interim Committee

The Interim Committee was chaired by Henry L. Stimson himself. The other seven members were South Carolina Senator James F. Byrnes , Undersecretary of the Navy Ralph A. Bard , Assistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs William L. Clayton , Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD) and President of the Carnegie Institution Vannevar Bush , the President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and OSRD member Karl T. Compton , the President of Harvard University and OSRD member James B. Conant and the special assistant Stimsons for Atomic Bomb Issues and President of New York Life Insurance Company George L. Harrison .
