International Association for Media and Communication Research

The International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) (also Asociación Internacional de Estudios en Comunicación Social (AIECS) or Association Internationale des Études et Recherches sur l'Information et la Communication (AIERIC) ) is an international association of scientists and researchers in Area of ​​media and communication research.

The international organization supports and represents the interests of media and communication scientists worldwide. It is particularly committed to the freedom of science and research and supports especially younger and female members in their professional career development as well as members from economically disadvantaged regions of the world including scientists from Africa, Asia, South and Central America.

Other goals are

  • Networking and academic exchange of information between media and communication scientists, media politicians and media practitioners from different cultures and regions of the world.
  • Stimulation of media and communication science research at the local, national and international level, especially on issues of media production, media transmission and media reception and especially where this type of research is still underdeveloped.
  • Professionalization and quality assurance of media and communication research, media policy and media practice worldwide, especially the promotion of international and interdisciplinary research.
  • Promotion of interest in communication and media science research as well as dissemination of research results beyond the academic target group - especially with a view to media practice and media policy .
  • Developing and improving the training of journalists and other media practitioners through sound science and research.

The IAMCR was founded in 1957 with the support of UNESCO ( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ). It has over 2000 members from 100 countries on all continents. The US communication scientist Janet Wasko has been president since 2012. The IAMCR maintains formal advisory relationships with the UN system and has a special advisory status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations ( ECOSOC ).

The annual conferences take place in a different country each year.
