International Capture The Flag

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

International Capture The Flag (iCTF) is an international hacker competition which is organized annually by Giovanni Vigna from the Institute for Computer Security at the University of California, Santa Barbara (USA). The tasks are redefined every year.

history

In 2001 and 2002, the University of Santa Barbara hosted several real-time exercises for its students.

In December 2003 the first national event under the name UCSB CTF (University of California, Santa Barbara Capture the Flag) was held, in which the teams were encouraged to compromise the networks of the other teams and at the same time to defend their own network. 14 teams from the University of California, Santa Barbara, North Carolina State University , the Naval Postgraduate School , the United States Military Academy , the Georgia Institute of Technology , the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign participated .

In 2004, teams from Austria, Germany, Italy and Norway took part for the first time. The event was renamed iCTF (International Capture The Flag).

procedure

The competition is held over the Internet, with each team competing against every other team at the same time.

The participants are assigned servers at the beginning of the competition. Programs are installed on these which must be kept running. The first thing to do is to analyze servers and programs, identify weak points and close security gaps. At the same time, precisely these identified weak points are to be used to attack the opponent. There are points for all of this. You also get points if your own programs are kept running despite attacks.
