International refugee organization
The International Refugee Organization (Engl. International Refugee Organization , IRO ) was a specialized agency of the United Nations , which on 20 April 1946 as the successor to the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration was established (UNRRA).
The organization, based in Geneva, was responsible for caring for Europeans who had become homeless as a result of World War II , especially Holocaust survivors and former forced laborers , the so-called displaced persons . The authority also organized the repatriation of these people to their home countries or their emigration to other countries. The IRO ceased operations on January 31, 1952, after serving about a million people. After a liquidation phase , the organization was officially dissolved on September 30, 1953. It has been replaced by the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
