International German Championship 1981
The International German Championship 1981 was a chess tournament that was held from March 17th to April 3rd 1981 in Bochum . The event was also referred to as the International Grandmaster Tournament of the German Chess Federation .

From 1971 to 1983 the German Chess Federation organized international German individual championships in the years when no championship was held in the Federal Republic of Germany . All of these tournaments were held as a round-robin tournament with sixteen participants each. In addition to the winners of the previous National Individual Championship, strong foreign players were invited to the tournaments. It was a tournament of Category 9 with an Elo -average of the 2456th
The Bochum chess society celebrated its 50th anniversary with the tournament . The tournament took place in the Stadtpark restaurant.
The superior winner of the tournament was Lubomir Kavalek (right picture). The best German player was Otto Borik , who was able to meet his first IM standard.
